Croatian Napkin Tricks

And, this is not to be confused with "Stupid Pet Tricks!"

As I mentioned in the previous post, Sunday afternoon we returned to Bona Fide Restaurant (serves both Italian and Mexican food) for happy hour.  The reason we had gone to this restaurant in the first place several days ago was that it had gluten-free options.  Kiki, the waiter, was particularly good on that first visit to make sure Linda's choice was both gluten and dairy free.  So, after that, we went back a couple of times to stop for a drink.  The waiters (Kiki and, later, Niko) got to know us and were a lot of fun.  So, as we sat there, me sipping on my rose wine and Linda her lemonade and both of us munching on chips and salsa, Nico arrived with a "rose flower" he had fashioned out of a white paper napkin for each of us.  Very sweet!

Not to be outdone, I showed him my two napkin "tricks" - making a little hat and folding a napkin so it can be used as a mitt to hold Spanish coffee.  While he was mastering those, the owner of the restaurant opposite (Mea Culpa - another fun place) had been watching us and smiling.  The next thing we knew he came over with a linen napkin and fashioned a boat (didn't get a photo of that), a star, and a flower (I'd seen the latter before as it is good for serving soups or salads if you want to get "fancy").  He was older and told us he'd worked in the hotel industry for more than 22 years and had learned to do them while he was in school.  So, we all had a good laugh and it was quite fun.

Of course I needed a photo of them all!

It wasn't lost on me later, when we were at 360', the "basket" the bread was served in was also fashioned from a napkin.

Clearly these Croatians have a few napkin tricks - but this Canadian had one or two up her sleeve to show them too!
