After taking some photos there, we headed further along the coast through Exmoor. We stopped to see the ponies and the spectacular views across Bristol Channel and east along the coastline.
We stopped for lunch at another picturesque village called Porlock Weir that Kath and I had discovered in 2015. It was sunny but cool there and a beer fest was on for the weekend. Where is my sister? She would have loved that - 50 different kinds of beer! We had lunch at the Ship Inn, a thatched pub and then drove further along the A39 and, by then, we were in Somerset.
At Dunster, a very pretty village that I have promised myself to come back to one day and spend more time there, we turned off the highway - and remember this "highway" in these parts is often very narrow and today, at one point there was a traffic jam as a camper van tried to get by an oncoming lorry; it took ages for them to manoeuvre by each other - and headed into the National Exmoor Forest to the village of Exford where we had booked an inn for the night.
We got there around 4, had some tea, caught up on emails and rested before heading out for dinner. Although the village was only about a 10 minute walk away, none of us wanted to walk back home along the dark road which had no sidewalks (at least for the first part) and no streetlights. So, I drove. Our choice for dinner was a pub called The White Horse. It was a great choice. The service was good and the food was delicious. One part of the bar had a "Malt Bar" with lots of Scotch bottles hanging from the ceiling - a Scotch lover's dream!
Stockleigh Lodge where we stayed has stables so that people can bring their horses to ride in the forest. Apparently, the most popular time of the year is later in the summer and fall during the "hunt" season. We had a lovely traditional "full English breakfast" before we left. Now we are headed to Wales.
